Town Councillors are elected by the people of Welshpool to represent their community and make decisions about local services, facilities and projects.

Elections are an important way for residents to have a say in how the town is run and who speaks on their behalf.

When elections take place

Town Council elections are normally held every five years. They may also take place at other times if a seat becomes vacant and a by-election is required. The next scheduled elections is May 2027.

Welshpool is divided into three wards, and each ward elects five councillors to represent that area.

All Town Council elections are administered by Powys County Council, who act as the Returning Officer and are responsible for the formal election process.

Who can vote

You can vote in Town Council elections if you are registered to vote in Welshpool and meet the usual eligibility criteria (such as age, nationality and residence).

Powys County Council manages voter registration and polling arrangements.

Standing for election

Anyone who meets the legal requirements can stand for election as a Town Councillor. Councillors are not paid, but the role gives local people the opportunity to influence decisions, represent residents, and help shape the future of Welshpool.

When elections or vacancies arise, details about how to stand for election, nomination deadlines and guidance notes are published by Powys County Council.

Uncontested elections and vacancies

If the number of candidates is the same as (or fewer than) the number of seats available, councillors may be elected without a poll being held. When vacancies occur between elections, they may be filled by a by-election or by co-option, depending on the circumstances and legal requirements.
