Council
Welshpool Town Council is the most local level of government in the town. We exist to represent the community, provide local services, and help shape the future of Welshpool.
The Council is made up of 15 councillors from the town’s three wards, supported by a small team of staff. Together, we work to make Welshpool a better place to live, work and visit.
What we do
We look after a range of local services, spaces and projects that matter to everyday life in the town. This includes things like:
- Town halls, community buildings and public spaces
- Parks, play areas, toilets and outdoor facilities
- Markets, events and seasonal activities
- Tourism and promotion of Welshpool
- Allotments and local amenities
- Supporting community groups and local initiatives
We also comment on planning applications, work closely with Powys County Council and other partners, and speak up for Welshpool on issues that affect the town.
Our role
Town Councils don’t replace the County Council, but we do focus on very local priorities. Our role is to:
- Represent the views of residents
- Improve and protect local facilities
- Support community wellbeing
- Encourage regeneration, tourism and town pride
- Make sure public money is spent responsibly and transparently
Decisions are made at public meetings, where residents are welcome to attend, ask questions and see how the Council works.
How we’re funded
Welshpool Town Council is funded mainly through a part of Council Tax called the precept. This money is used entirely for services, projects and facilities in Welshpool. Find out more about our finances here.
