Community
Welshpool (Welsh: Trallwng) is a historic market town in Mid Wales, serving as an important local centre for the surrounding rural area. Set in the Severn Valley and overlooked by Powis Castle, the town has been a focus of trade, craftsmanship and community life for centuries.
Today, Welshpool is a working town as well as a place people are proud to call home — with schools, independent shops, markets, parks, sports clubs, community groups and events that continue to bring people together.
A brief history of Welshpool
The origins of Welshpool can be traced back to early settlement around the River Severn. The town grew significantly in the medieval period, developing as a market centre and later becoming a borough with its own corporation in 1615.
Welshpool’s history is closely linked to the surrounding countryside, agriculture and trade, and to landmarks such as Powis Castle, the Motte & Bailey, and the town’s historic street pattern and buildings.
The arrival of the canal and railway in the 18th and 19th centuries strengthened Welshpool’s role as a commercial hub, connecting it to wider markets and supporting local industries.
Local government has been part of the town’s life for hundreds of years, with the Office of Mayor established in 1836 and continuing today through Welshpool Town Council.
Welshpool today
Modern Welshpool balances its heritage with everyday life. The town centre remains home to a weekly market, local businesses and community facilities, while green spaces, play areas and walking routes support wellbeing and outdoor activity.
Welshpool hosts a wide range of events throughout the year — from community celebrations and markets to cultural and seasonal activities — helping to support local traders, tourism and civic life.
The town also has a strong tradition of volunteering and community action, with many groups, clubs and charities contributing to social life, heritage, sport and support services.
A community town
Welshpool’s character is shaped by the people who live and work here. Residents, businesses, community organisations and volunteers play an active role in the town’s future, whether through local projects, events, consultation, or involvement in civic life.
Welshpool Town Council works alongside these groups to protect local facilities, support community services, care for public spaces and help guide the town’s long-term development.
