Town Council commits to Civility and Respect
Published on 15 June 2026
Welshpool Town Council has formally adopted the One Voice Wales Civility and Respect Pledge, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of behaviour, professionalism and mutual respect across all aspects of its work.
The pledge, developed by One Voice Wales in partnership with the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) and the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), encourages councils to foster positive working relationships between councillors, staff, volunteers, partner organisations and members of the public.
The Council formally adopted the pledge at its meeting in May 2026, recognising that civility, courtesy and respect are fundamental to effective local government and strong community leadership.
By signing the pledge, Welshpool Town Council has committed to:
- Treating councillors, employees, volunteers, partners and members of the public with civility and respect.
- Maintaining robust governance arrangements, including staff contracts and workplace dignity policies.
- Providing appropriate training and support for councillors and staff.
- Challenging bullying and harassment whenever it occurs.
- Seeking professional support at an early stage if issues arise.
- Learning from best practice and striving to be a positive role model within the sector.
Mayor of Welshpool, Cllr Revd William Rowell, said:
"Local councils work best when everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
"By adopting this pledge, Welshpool Town Council is demonstrating its commitment to maintaining a positive and professional culture that supports effective decision-making and constructive debate, while ensuring all those involved in local democracy are valued and respected."
The Council hopes that adopting the pledge will help reinforce a culture where everyone involved in local government feels able to contribute positively, confidently and respectfully.
