Election called for vacant seat in Castle Ward

Following the resignation of Sally Fitzgerald last month, an election has been called by the relevant number of required electors in Castle Ward.

The official notice, issued by Powys County Council’s Returning Officer, formally opens the nomination period for candidates wishing to stand for election. 

If the election is contested, polling day will take place on Thursday 22nd October 2026. 

Residents who wish to take part in the democratic process are reminded to check they are registered to vote. The deadline to register is midnight on 6th October 2026, with further deadlines in place for postal and proxy vote applications later in October. 

Town Clerk Richard Williams said:

"Local democracy plays an important role in shaping the future of Welshpool."

"We encourage anyone who is passionate about their community to consider standing for election and to contact the Returning Officer for further information about the nomination process."
